A cast of hundreds of performers, from hip hop dancers to Viking hordes, are set to invade the centre of Telford for the borough’s biggest free event of the summer - CultureFest in Telford Town Park this Saturday, July 24.

The event, now in its third year, promises to be the biggest and best CultureFest yet, with the fun starting from 11am.

Among the names performing are winners of this year’s Telford’s Talent competition dance group High Definition who will kick off proceedings on the main stage, hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire’s Eric Smith.

The Mayor of Shrewsbury is urging town residents and businesses to get behind final preparations for this year’s In Bloom campaign.

Heart of England judges will visit the town on July 20 when hundreds of floral hanging baskets, planters and containers, installed by the Town Council, will be judged against exacting criteria.

At a recent meeting, Wrekin & Telford Liberal Democrats approved councillor, David Murray, as their Wrekin candidate. 

David moved to the West Midlands to work for GKN in 1986, and lives in the constituency. With a wealth of business experience in new product development, he is particularly concerned about the nationwide decline in manufacturing, and lack of investment in our future. The current situation is not helped by the bailed-out banks refusing loans to around half of commercial applicants.

PostHeaderIcon Possible Congestion warning during Funeral of Shropshire Teenager

Police today urged drivers to be prepared for traffic congestion in a village near Shrewsbury while the funeral of a teenager killed in a road collision takes place.

A large amount of people are expected to attend St George’s Church in Pontesbury on Friday (FEB 5) afternoon for the funeral of Sophie Rowlands, who died on January 25th after her car was in collision with a lorry on the A53.

PostHeaderIcon Shropshire Woman takes High Peak Trail Winter Challenge for BHF

A Shropshire woman whose mother died of a heart attack on Christmas Day in 2007, is taking part in the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) High Peak Trail Winter Challenge, on Sunday 22 November 2009.

Deborah Weaver (40), from Telford, felt inspired to take on the 17 mile hike and make a difference in memory of her mother. Deborah will be walking with her brother Mark and friend Joanne and hopes that the people of Shropshire will support their efforts and sign up for the event.

Councillor Pauline Picken has died. Mrs Picken served as a councillor for 12 years from 1991, representing first the Ketley Bank ward on Wrekin District Council and, following Telford & Wrekin Council achieving unitary status, the Ketley ward. She was a former Deputy Leader of the Council and was a leading councillor on housing issues.

She was also a member of both Lawley & Overdale and Ketley Parish Councils and had been chair of the Wrekin Housing Group.

St Mary, Shrewsbury, home to the most significant collection of stained glass in the UK and St Leonard, Bridgnorth, which survived an explosion after being used by Cromwell’s troops as an ammunition store, will be throwing open their doors and their history as they join other historic churches at risk across England in a unique public singing event over the weekend of 3 – 4 October.

Two historic Shropshire churches will be alive with music over the weekend of 3 – 4 October as they take their place among 40 historic churches across England tended by The Churches Conservation Trust hosting a series of choral performances and workshops to celebrate the Trust’s 40th birthday – and encourage people to rediscover and enjoy these ancient churches, no longer used for regular worship.

PostHeaderIcon Council confirms new Chief Executive

Telford & Wrekin Council has appointed Victor Brownlees as its new chief executive. The appointment was confirmed by councillors at a meeting last night and the move will see Mr Brownlees move from his post as interim chief executive at the beginning of August. He succeeds previous chief executive Steve Wellings.

Mr Brownlees joined Telford & Wrekin Council two years ago as director of resources and was previously clerk & chief executive of Armagh City & District Council in Northern Ireland.

Chillington Hall, the magnificent Stately Home on the Shropshire / Staffordshire border, is hosting its third Food and Country Fair, on Sunday 19th July between 10am and 5pm, after its huge success last year!

The Food Fair is organised in conjunction with South Staffordshire Tourism Association and South Staffordshire District Council and looks set to be a fantastic family day out!
