Tenants invited to Annual Conference
Tenants of Shropshire’s largest landlord, The Wrekin Housing Trust, are being invited to the fourth annual Tenants’ Conference later this month.
The one day event, which is organised by tenants for tenants, will be held on Saturday 23 January, between 9.30am and 4.00pm, at the Trust’s Old Park offices and is open to all Trust tenants.
War Artist work on display
Lincolnshire-born former Mayor of Walsall, Richard Worrall (and Walsall resident since 1970!), has brokered an exciting exhibition of his late father's wartime paintings at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas.
Councillor dies
Councillor Pauline Picken has died. Mrs Picken served as a councillor for 12 years from 1991, representing first the Ketley Bank ward on Wrekin District Council and, following Telford & Wrekin Council achieving unitary status, the Ketley ward. She was a former Deputy Leader of the Council and was a leading councillor on housing issues.
She was also a member of both Lawley & Overdale and Ketley Parish Councils and had been chair of the Wrekin Housing Group.
Shrewsbury firework display CANCELLED
The management at Shropshire’s West Mid Showground have revealed they have been 'forced' to cancel the 2009 bonfire and firework spectacular at the last minute. The event was due to take place this weekend marking the close of the bi-centenary year of the birth of Shropshire-born naturalist Charles Darwin. But the society has experienced financial problems amid the recession and the effect of the economic crisis and demands from suppliers means the November 7 event cannot go ahead.
Fun run boost for CultureFest 09

Nearly 400 people have signed up to take part in the Let’s Get Physical Fun Run which takes place on Saturday (AUG 29) at Telford & Wrekin’s Culture Fest.
Runners, joggers and walkers of all ages will be joining the event in the Town Park to make it a colourful spectacle.
Talent show singing sensation gears up for CultureFest 09

Budding young singing star Daniel Crossley is warming up for his biggest gig yet at the borough’s CultureFest – via the time honoured pop star method of singing into the mirror! Telford’s Got Talent winner Daniel is also starting to practice songs from different genres such as musical theatre and rock to help him broaden his live repertoire. But he’s promised his fans that R&B will remain his first love as he prepares for the event in Telford Town Park on Saturday August 29.
Telford & Wrekin CultureFest ‘09
A vibrant programme is lined up for the ‘Telford & Wrekin CultureFest’ 09’ which takes place on Saturday 29 August in Telford Town Park.
CultureFest ’09 follows on from the success of last year’s event which attracted thousands of people of all ages.
This year’s event is absolutely free and includes an exciting mix of music, dance, sport and creative arts.
Listen & Care Centre opens its doors
The Listen & Care self-help group is holding an Open Day to mark the official opening of its brand new £400,000 premises in Leegomery on Thursday 6 August. The Open Day, which runs from 10am until 2pm, offers an opportunity for local people and members of partner organisations to go along and see the Centre in action. Listen and Care provides support for people enduring mental health problems and the service was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Award for Volunteers last year.
Record entry for young people's art exhibition
This year's open art exhibition for children and young people is proving a huge success with record numbers entering the competition.
Over 50 young people aged three to nineteen years have submitted artwork, all with the hope of displaying their talents in a special exhibition at The Gallery at The Place which will run until 12 September with a special preview evening on 6 July.
Accolades for Sports Clubs in award ceremony
A top cricket coach scooped top award in a ceremony recognising the achievements of Telford and Wrekin's sports clubs. Phil Lloyd received the Ricoh Perpetual Award for his Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity at Telford and Wrekin Sports Club Awards evening at Sport TCAT.
This inaugural event included eight individual awards and was overseen by Telford and Wrekin Sports Advisory Council, supported by Ricoh, TCAT and TWC.
Winners will represent Telford and Wrekin in October's Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin event.
