Boston United 1-2 AFC Telford United
FA Trophy First Round

An opening goal from Danny Carey-Bertram and a stunning second from Steve Jagielka just before the break ensured that AFC Telford United notched a second consecutive FA Trophy victory in Lincolnshire with this win over Boston United at York Street, writes Steve Humbles.

Boston started well and Ryan Young had to be alert to save Steve Melton's effort from outside the area on 10 minutes. As the half progressed, however, Telford began to get into their stride and the Bucks were awarded a penalty on 27 minutes when Lee Moore's run into the box was halted by David Farrell. Boston goalkeeper Martyn Margarson rescued his side by diving low to his left to tip away Danny Carey-Bertram's spot-kick, but to their credit Telford didn't let the missed chance affect them and on 34 minutes the visitors had the lead. Carey-Bertram exchanged passes with Terry Fearns before bursting into the area and squeezing a shot just inside Margarson's right-hand post, despite Farrell's best efforts to clear. There was a scare for Telford on 40 minutes when Indy Khela cleared off the line from Jon Froggatt, but three minutes later the Bucks scored a superb second goal. Telford broke at pace and, after Fearns had burst down the right, he played the ball inside to Jagielka who unleashed a superb 25-yard strike which looped over Margarson and into the net.

The second-half started in a similar vein with the Bucks on top. Fearns forced Margarson to block at his near-post just two minutes after the restart, and another excellent break involving Jagielka, Carey-Bertram and Fearns ended with Carey-Bertram's fierce left-foot drive being tipped over by Margarson on 55 minutes. Blakeman's shot on the turn was well-held by Margarson on 62 but, as the game entered the closing minutes, Boston started to push forward frantically in search of a way back into the tie. With four minutes left of normal time Ollie Ryan floated an effort just wide of Young's right-hand post, and in the final minute substitute Jon Rowan gave the Pilgrims a glimmer of hope by heading in a left-wing corner at the near-post. Referee Rathbone then added on five minutes of injury-time, during which the home side put the Bucks under considerable pressure. Goalkeeper Margarson went forward for a last-ditch corner as Boston threw men forward, but it was all to no avail for the Pilgrims as Telford held on to move into the FA Trophy Second Round.
