Community Cricket match “knocked them for Six”
Participants at The community Twenty/20 cricket tournament held at Wellington Cricket Club yesterday were knocked for six by the success of the event, Wellington News has learned. It was organised by the Arleston & College Local Policing Team and Local Police Officer PC Sam Anderson was happy to agree that the event was a great success.
The tournament was organised in an attempt to bring the community closer together and promote improved links between different sections of the community. Four teams took part in the tournament – representing Wellington Cricket Club, Telford Police, the Arleston ward and the College ward – and two semi-finals were played at midday to decide the two finalists.
In the first semi-final Wellington Cricket Club defeated College to reach the final, while on pitch two the Police team defeated Arleston in a tight match in which more than 300 runs were scored.
PC Anderson, Local Police Officer for Arleston & College, said: “The two semi-finals were excellent matches played in a friendly but competitive spirit. In the final Wellington Cricket Club then went on to win the Shield, defeating the Police team by 100 runs, while in the match to decide third and fourth place, in a very noble gesture, the Arleston team conceded victory to College when the rain arrived causing the match to be abandoned. I’m really pleased with how successful the tournament was and all the players that took part seemed to very much enjoy themselves.
“We had a good turn out from supporters too - with many people bringing children along for the day as well. The College versus Arleston game was particularly pleasing to watch as it was good to see two sections of the community playing each other on the sporting field in such a good spirit. Events like this are put on in an attempt to promote confidence, satisfaction and reassurance in the community and from that point of view the tournament was an undoubted success.”
She continued: “I’d really like to thank Wellington Cricket Club for their hospitality in agreeing to host this tournament and I’d also like to thank Wellington’s Mayor Barry Tillotson for coming to the event and presenting the Winner’s Shield to the victorious team from the cricket club.
“Most importantly though, I’d like to thank all the players for their commitment and enthusiasm on the day and for giving up their time to take part in the tournament. It is certainly something we’ll look to do again next year because all the feedback we have received has been very positive and therefore we may try to make this tournament an annual event.”
