Four men arrested in connection with the death of a 52-year-old Shrewsbury man were still being questioned by police today. The four were taken into custody on suspicion of murder after the man was found with serious stab wounds at a flat in Kynaston Road, Harlescott on Wednesday night. He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.

Detectives launched a murder inquiry with around 50 officers, led by senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Lee Davenport from West Mercia’s Major Incident Unit, continuing to work on the investigation.

DCI Davenport said today police were applying to magistrates to extend the detention period for further questioning of the suspects throughout today and tomorrow.

He said: “The investigation is going well and we are making good progress. Members of the public in the locality of the flat have given us tremendous support and we are continuing to interview a number of potential witnesses who have come forward.

“However, I am still anxious to hear from anyone with relevant information who has not yet contacted the police. It is vital they contact Shrewsbury Police Station on 0300-333-3000 as a matter of urgency.”

He said police were initially notified by the ambulance service at 6.20pm on Wednesday night about the injured man in a first floor flat at 8 Kynaston Road. “We particularly want to hear from people who may have seen or heard a commotion or argument between a group of men in the period prior to that time, either in the street or at the block of flats.

“Likewise, we are anxious to hear from anyone who might have seen an argument in the Kynaston and Lancaster Roads area in the days leading up to this incident. Please do get in touch if you have any information at all, however insignificant it may seem.”

He said police search teams were continuing their work at the scene together with a detailed examination of the premises by forensic staff.

“Our work is progressing well and at this stage, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. A number of items have been recovered from the flat which are being forensically examined.”

A post mortem was conducted yesterday by Home Office pathologist Dr Kenneth Shorrock. It is hoped the man, who has not yet been named by police, will be formally identified later today.
