Telford book Trophy Quarter Final spot
Kettering Town 0 AFC Telford United 1
AFC Telford United booked their place in the last eight of the FA Carlsberg Trophy with a stubborn 1-0 win at Blue Square Premier side Kettering Town on Saturday. Rob Smith's men defeated their higher league opponents for the second time in under two weeks with a single Danny Carey-Bertram goal enough to split the two sides.
Having beaten a weakened Kettering side ten days earlier in the Setanta Shield at the New Bucks Head, United were expecting a much tougher match at the A-Line Arena. But despite some sustained possession, Mark Cooper’s Kettering were a disappointing shadow of the side that ran away with the Blue Square North title last season.
With Andy Brown and Terry Fearns on the sidelines Smith employed Carey-Bertram as a lone striker and it was the former Hereford United man who opened the scoring on 23 minutes. Kettering striker Jason Lee failed to clear a Telford corner and it was Lee Moore who pounced to shoot, and his shot was deflected past Poppies keeper Lee Harper with via the deftest of touches from Carey-Bertram.
Kettering created little by the way of clear-cut chances with Craig Westcarr squandering their best effort on Ryan Young’s goal when he fired his shot right down Young throat.
Telford’s defensive discipline, which has been found wanting during recent league matches remained intact throughout and Kettering were restricted to nothing more than a few half-chances from set plays and corners.
