Telford & Wrekin Council's Home Improvement Agency is shortlisted from over 300 entries to the Housing Heroes Awards. This is a new awards scheme launched this year that aims to shine the spotlight on people and teams doing great work in the social/affordable housing sector. TWC’s Home Improvement Agency is now one of six left in the running for the 'Support/Care Team of the Year'. The event is organised by Inside Housing magazine and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), and attracted a phenomenal response with submissions from all over the UK.
Youtube driver charged
An 18-year-old man has been charged with careless driving following a police investigation into footage posted on an internet video website. The man answered bail at Telford Police Station yesterday, March 30th. He was charged before being bailed to appear at court this month. An investigation was launched by Shropshire police to identify the driver, after footage of a car travelling from Shrewsbury to Telford was posted on YouTube.

Easter fun At Telford Steam Railway
Telford Steam Railway's volunteers are gearing up for its 150th anniversary this year with an annual Easter Bunny Extravaganza on Easter Sunday and Monday, April 12th and 13th. The bunny will give children Easter Eggs and adults a hot cross bun! 2009 is exciting. It's 150 years since a train first travelled from Wellington to Shifnal through Horsehay on May 2. TSR has a gala season arranged including a commemorative event. Joining TSR this year is a new steam locomotive, built in Belgium of an unusual vertical boiler design.
Support for jobseekers in Dawley
One-to-one advice and support will be offered job seekers at an event in Dawley on 3 April. The employment and training day is a 'drop in' event organised to help anyone seeking work. It takes place at Dawley Christian Centre, Dawley High Street, 10am to 12noon. Several organisations will be there, offering advice on courses, qualifications and apprenticeships. There'll be CV writing tips, interview skills, coping with redundancy and job searching, particularly on the internet.
Police surgery to be launched
Residents in Ketley & Oakengates are being invited to attend a new Police Surgery that is being launched in the ward. The Ketley & Oakengates Local Policing Team are launching the initiative in an attempt to encourage local people to discuss community issues with them so that they can ensure they really are tackling the issues that matter most to people in the ward.
Wellington shop's Spring ranges
Shoppers at leading veterinary charity PDSA’s Wellington shop can now brighten up their wardrobes at bargain prices after the shop unveiled its Spring and Summer clothing collection. Located at 32 New Street, Wellington PDSA shop raises funds to provide free veterinary treatment in the local area through the Telford PDSA PetAid practice service.
Gas Safe Register replaces CORGI
Telford & Wrekin Council's Trading Standards would like to notify the public, trade and businesses that the 'Gas Safe Register' will fully replace the CORGI gas registration scheme from 1 April 2009. The Gas Safe Register will be Great Britain's gas safety authority. By law, from 1 April, only Gas Safe registered engineers should be employed to carry out work on gas installations or appliances - CORGI gas registration will not be valid.
Trains replaced with buses
Trains to and from Wellington and Telford were replaced with coaches after a train failed at Wellington. The train, an Arriva Trains Wales service to Birmingham International was unable to continue when the brakes locked on. Trains provided by London Midland were also stopped and trains to Wellington and Shrewsbury operated by London Midland and Arriva were also delayed.

Phone Arrears Payment Scam Warning
Police in Shropshire are warning the community not to fall for a phone scam currently doing the rounds across the country. Numerous reports have been received in recent weeks from people who have lost money by giving out their bank details over the phone to bogus BT employees. Victims have stated that they had a call from someone purporting to be from BT, who informs them that their telephone account is in arrears and they were likely to be cut off - but if they made a telephone payment there and then, all would be well.
