Council to add to Wrekin's status as beauty spot
Imposing borough landmark the Wrekin is set to get further support to manage and conserve its natural beauty. A report to Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet will show that as well being part of the nationally designated Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) an area around the Wrekin, including the Wrekin Forest, will get its own plan. The aim of this will be to help promote conservation and manage the area in a way that will help to enhance its natural beauty and features.
MP Welcomes Clamping Consultation
Telford MP David Wright has welcomed a major new consultation into plans to subject rogue wheel clamping businesses to tough new regulations which was announced by the Home Office today. The public consultation sets out proposals for licensing wheel clamping firms and is an opportunity for members of the public and all interested groups including wheel clamping businesses and motoring organisations to have their say.
Oakengates Parish Meeting
A parish meeting of the Parish of Oakengates will be held at 7.00 pm on Thursday, 7th May 2009. It will take place in the Hosanna Room, The Salvation Army building, Lion Street, Oakengates, Telford. All local government electors for the parish are entitled to attend. The Parsh Clerk has pointed out: "As the parish meeting is for electors of the parish, non-electors of the parish should not participate in the proceedings, although they are entitled to be present. The Chairman is entitled to attend whether or not he or she is an elector for the parish."
Four cops off to New York
A team of officers from Shrewsbury's Town Centre Police Station will cross the Atlantic to take part in a gruelling race for a cancer charity. Sergeant Claire Greenaway, Community Support Officer Derek Hughes-Beddows and Constables Ben Hocking and Adie Davies have all stepped up to take on the challenge of the New York Marathon to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. They have just six months of intense training before the big day and hope to raise £10,000 for the charity, with anything raised on top of this going to West Mercia's own charity, the Police Community Fund.
Crime event praised
Telford's Neighbourhood Watch Administrator has hailed the success of a Crime Prevention Surgery held at Wellington Market on Tuesday 28th April. The Surgery was held as one of several events the Telford Police Division have organised to support the work of the week long 'Operation Protect', a campaign launched right across the Force educating the public about the need to keep their home 'Safe and Secure'. Mrs Walker and a number of CSOs were on hand at Wellington Market from 9am until 2pm engaging with local people while looking after a crime prevention stand.
Chief executive to leave Council
After almost eight years at Telford & Wrekin Council, Steve Wellings, the Council's chief executive is leaving at the end of July to pursue other interests. Steve joined the Council in September 2001 as Corporate Director (Resources) and became Chief Executive in November 2006. The Council has started arrangements for an interim replacement and will begin the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive, which is expected to take a number of months. In the meantime, the Council will continue its officer restructuring designed to reduce the costs of running the organisation.
Do Not Go to Mexico: Official
The Foreign Office has issued a warning that people should not travel to Mexico unless they have urgent business there. And it calls on British residents in the country to leave, if they can. "The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 4 (evidence of increased human to human transmission). Volunteers needed for Sanktuary
Volunteers are needed to help run the new Sanktuary centre in Wellington. The safe haven has been set up to offer partygoers in Wellington a secure and warm place to take time out after a night out and the project is looking for more volunteers to help at the centre. The project is run by volunteers who give their time each week to help where they can, provide first aid, make fresh drinks, cakes and snacks (all provided free of charge), and to help Clubbers get home safely.
Council firm on beauty spot mine bid
Plans by a mining giant will be fought all the way by TWC at a planning inquiry that began this week. The Council will oppose UK Coal's plans to mine coal from an open cast site near the Wrekin. The inquiry, which will consider an application by UK Coal for open cast mining at Huntington Lane, near Little Wenlock, could last six weeks. During the inquiry, the Council will give an independent planning inspector a number of legal reasons why he should reject the application.
Breaking News: Missing man found
MIssing 'vulnerable' Telford man Sol Gaughan, reported as 'missing' by Telford Police who were concerned about his safety, was found safe and well some 30 minutes ago at 12.30pm. Mr Gaughan's family were concerned about his safety.
