The results have been declared in by elections held yesterday in two town council wards in Telford and Wrekin.

The by elections for the Newport East ward of Newport Town Council and the Park Ward of Wellington Town Council were held following the resignations of the councillors in these wards.

The polls have seen Peter John Scott elected as the councillor for Newport East and Philip Thomas Morris-Jones elected as the councillor for Park Ward.

Measures to curb alcohol misuse in Dawley Magna ward come into force on 1 September. The new powers create a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) in Dawley covering:
1. Captain Web Drive from Heath Hill Roundabout to King Street
2. B4373 Springhill Road from Heath Hill Roundabout to New Street
3. New Street from Springhill Road to High Street’s cul de sac
4. King Street from Captain Webb Drive to its cul de sac with the High Street.

Plans to continue with the transformation of a Telford estate will go on show on Monday 3 August. A public exhibition of the proposals for the redevelopment of Woodside’s local centre are on display in the lobby at Park Lane Community Centre, Park Lane, Woodside for six weeks.

In tribute to Harry Patch, who died at the weekend at the age of 111, the wreath laid by him at the Cenotaph last Armistice Day has gone on public display at the National Memorial Arboretum.

Harry Patch, who joined the Army aged 18, fought in the Battle of Passchendaele at Ypres in 1917. The battle resulted in the deaths of more than 70,000 British soldiers.

Telford & Wrekin Council has appointed Victor Brownlees as its new chief executive. The appointment was confirmed by councillors at a meeting last night and the move will see Mr Brownlees move from his post as interim chief executive at the beginning of August. He succeeds previous chief executive Steve Wellings.

Mr Brownlees joined Telford & Wrekin Council two years ago as director of resources and was previously clerk & chief executive of Armagh City & District Council in Northern Ireland.
